Upon Taking Ownership of Your Home
After taking possession of your home, you should consider doing the following:
Change the locks on all exterior doors, including sheds for security purposes
Install fire extinguishers near stoves, in garages and sheds, and keep one handy near fireplaces and wood stoves.
Check smoke detectors. Ensure one is on each level of the home and they work.
CREATE A FIRE EXIT PLAN TO EVACUATE YOUR HOME in the event of a fire or other emergency. Regularly practice this with your children.
Keep emergency numbers near the phone - police, ambulance and fire. Inform these services if you or a family member require special care, i.e. home oxygen.
Make repairs to trip hazards inside and out.
Review your inspection report and address the issues in the report keeping your and others safety in mind.
If the work is out of your ability hire professionals like a plumber and most definitely an electrician.
Know where your main service shut offs are - water, gas and hydro. These locations should have been pointed out to you if you joined your inspector during the inspection.
Pump the septic tank if your home has one (fresh start), and make a note for future pumping schedules.
Have your water tested; regular testing of water is recommended.
New home buyers follow the TARION reporting schedule. If you had a home inspector help you with your PDI they may be able to assist you with the reports.
